Miss Roshni Patel is a member of the high risk maternal medicine team. Specifically she is the clinical lead for the antenatal maternal cardiac service and offers pre-pregnancy counselling to this complex group of antenatal patients (at the Royal Brompton hospital). Miss Patel gained an MSc in Epidemiology (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) and her Masters thesis compared gestational length in different ethnic groups. Miss Patel’s PhD was in obstetric epidemiology, analysing a cohort of over 14,000 children and evaluating the outcomes of different modes of delivery in mothers and neonates.

She also participates closely in other research, such as a RCT of decision aids for women who have had a previous caesarean section, a cohort study of women with complex delivery in the second stage of labour and analyses of the effects of depression and anxiety on the fetus. She continues to research in these and allied fields. Miss Patel is co-author on a teaching guide for the MRCOG Part 2 and helped to set up the practice course for this exam. She is also the lead for the perinatal mental health obstetric service. With her team she not only offers support to individuals with known psychiatric disease, but also to women with phobias, eating disorders, fear of labour and previous traumatic deliveries.

Other contributions

Miss Patel has shared and gained much experience whist working in South Africa and has participated in a VSO attachment to Bangladesh. She also has a Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals and has been mentoring undergraduates and teaching junior doctors for many years.
