Profile

Mr Simon Thompson specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including acute ligament injuries, especially ACL reconstruction where he has received international awards for his research. His surgical interests include meniscal injuries, complex ligament reconstruction and joint replacement. He also has a special interest in anterior knee pain in athletes, and he has treated and reconstructed knees in Olympic Gold medalists, treated all sporting arenas including athletes from international rugby, football, tennis and netball.

Mr Thompson is fellowship-trained by the top two knee world-leading knee surgeons from both the UK and Australia. He is a member of the British Knee Society and has been honoured as an international member of the highly prestigious Australian Knee Society (AKS).

He completed an MD(Res), MSc in Surgical Technology and Orthopaedics and BSc(Hons) undergraduate degree at Imperial College, London. He has also completed two PgCert and a PgDip in computer-navigated knee arthroplasty and radiological interventions around the knee using ultrasound. As part of his academic training, he was awarded the prestigious Surgical Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Simon has received international recognition with prizes and awards for his research, including many high-profile awards most noticeably the ISAKOS gold medal James Joyce award, Norman Capener Award, Ethicon Foundation Award, HCA International Award and Zimmer Arthroplasty Fellowship Award.

His soft tissue knee surgical interests include ACL, meniscal injuries, chondral lesions and complex ligament reconstruction. He also has a special interest in anterior knee pain in athletes. Simon performs day case partial knee replacement surgery using the latest microplasty techniques, and also carries out personalised patient-specific Visionaire instrumented knee replacements. Other contributions

Simon is invited to lecture and present on ligament reconstruction internationally, and his research is award-winning. His work on ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction has resulted in his research being internationally renowned and he has previously won the best paper award at the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.  Mr Thompson has contributed to many publications in the field of soft tissue knee surgery and is a faculty member on many orthopaedic training courses, as well as being a reviewer on the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine and Journal of Sports Rehabilitation.
