Profile

Dr Rebecca Scott is a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London, with a particular interest in managing diabetes and endocrine disorders in pregnancy.  She is also a consultant Obstetric Physician, specialising in looking after women with a broad spectrum of acute or chronic medical disorders who are planning for pregnancy or who are pregnant.

Dr Scott undertook her pre-clinical training at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge, where she was awarded First Class Honours. She undertook her clinical medical training at the University of Oxford, where she graduated with distinction. 

As a junior doctor, she moved to London, and trained in Diabetes and Endocrinology as well as General Internal Medicine in North West London.  During this time, she developed a specialist interest in Obstetric Medicine, and undertook fellowships at both Queen Charlotte and Chelsea Hospital and University College London Hospital in Obstetric Medicine, and was awarded the first ever Professional Diploma in Obstetric Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians.  She also completed a PhD at Imperial College London investigating the role of gut hormones in obesity.

Dr Scott offers a comprehensive service in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

This includes:

• Diabetes, particularly diabetes in pregnancy (type 1 and type 2)
• Gestational diabetes
• Cystic-fibrosis related diabetes
• Thyroid disease
• Reproductive endocrinology including PCOS
• Hyperprolactinaemia Pituitary disease
• Disorders of calcium metabolism

As an Obstetric Physician, Dr Scott offers services to women with medical conditions who are considering pregnancy or are pregnant.  She has expertise in managing women with diverse medical issues prior to and during pregnancy, including endocrine, gastroenterological, rheumatological, respiratory, neurological and cardiac conditions. She offers:

• Comprehensive pre-conception counselling, including reviewing how medical conditions affect pregnancy, how pregnancy may affect medical conditons and their management, and how a woman can optimise her health and medications to prepare for pregnancy.
• Management of medical conditions in pregnancy, including pregnancy specific conditions such as hyperemesis gravidarum, pregnancy induced hypertension and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.

Other contributions

Dr Scott is actively involved in research in medical conditions in pregnancy, with collaborations with Imperial College London and the Royal Brompton Hospital.  This includes work into how best to prepare women with diabetes for pregnancy. She regularly lectures nationally and internationally on Diabetes & Endocrinology in Pregnancy. She has published a number of peer reviewed papers, as well as several book chapters and articles. She has recently co-written a ‘Case Histories in Obstetric Medicine’, due to be published as part of the Oxford Case Histories series by Oxford University Press. She also co-authored the chapter entitled ‘Endocrine Disorders in Pregnancy’ for the Oxford Handbook of Endocrinology & Diabetes, part of the Oxford Medical Handbooks Series.
